The “sweater curse” is a knitter’s superstition that warns that knitting a sweater for a significant other will cause the end of the relationship. Because knitting is time-consuming and laborious, the gift of a sweater can often exacerbate existing issues in a relationship; it can be either gifted thoughtlessly or received with insufficient gratitude.
Rooted in feminist traditions of soft sculpture, labour of love, and whole-assed theory, Sweater Curse is a series of sweater fragments retroactively knit for the artist’s ex-boyfriends in celebration of lesbianism.
